Endorsing products!

Rashmi Bansal told me that Bejan Daruwalla (Lord Ganesha’s grandson – that is what most astrologers of Indian Council of Astrological Services (ICAS) call him) is endorsing platinum ornaments for this Diwali. There is no harm in a celebrity astrologer endorsing consumer products. He after all is a celebrity, and becoming a celebrity ain’t easy. Celebrities can endorse Coke, they can endorse Lee Jeans or they can endorse bikes. But astrologers or spiritual leaders endorsing products should not send wrong signals to the believers or the non-believers!

It should be 2 years from now that a lady from a Platinum company met me. She was asking me whether Platinum can be sold through astrology, and I replied, from the knowledge I have about astrology – platinum was never mentioned in any of the scriptures. Gold, silver, copper, brass, 9 gems, or even mercury is mentioned in Indian scriptures. They can be used for remedial measure or ayurveda, but then there is no mention of Platinum. I said of course – you can sell pendant in the shape of Ram (for Aries), Bull (for Taurean), or Fish (Pisces) – but then they will not have any astrological value, they will just have ornamental value. It would be like wearing a T-Shirt on which Aries is written – just a product to show off!

Things change with time, but rules don’t change. Even today most Indian astrologers use the rules that were written ages back, and none can or could add anything substantial to it. The scriptures on Astrology are complete, which doesn’t need anything new to be added or attached.

The moral of the story is – there is no harm in buying Platinum, but then they don’t have any astrological significance. (Kindly bear this in mind).

Here is another case –

Mass Media is like opium – very addictive. And TV the latest messiah – where people tend to believe or follow whatever is shown or published - blindly.

This is about Aamir Khan’s (in Hindi) / Radhika’s (in Tamil) new advertisement where in they visit Coke factory to let us know that – it is very safe to drink Coke. So drink and enjoy. I would treat them as Gods, if they had done the ad free of cost!

There are always two sides to the same coin. From one angle Coke says that the cola they make undergoes some 400 tests before bottled – fine - accepted for the time being. If that was true the scientists working at Centre of Science & Environment (CSE – New Delhi) should be insane crooks. They are the ones who raise the issue of Coke or Pepsi containing pesticides & insecticides since the year 2003. Did Aamir Khan or Radhika visit CSE to know the other side of the story? I am sure NO. Why should they? They won’t pay the celebrities in lakhs to ask the people NOT to drink Colas.

Just because you take up role of a social reformer in a movie, you don’t become one in real life. If that was the case Ben Kinsley should have been the next Mahatma Gandhi!

I am not against drinking Colas, though I stopped having them 4 yeas back. It is left to individuals. But then there is no value addition to your health or system by any Cola– whether it has pesticides or not. Better to sip a tender coconut, and help agriculture grow in India than allowing these companies to set up huge bottling companies, which eventually affects the environment & our farmers very badly.

Don’t miss to read this http://www.countercurrents.org/glo-sen190803.htm

Hope my blog makes at least one person in the world to choose tender coconuts or fresh juice over Colas.
