Sexual Favours – it ain’t about sex, it is about power!
Just a couple of days back, I was chatting to one of my friends/clients who is closely associated with the film industry. She is a mega serial producer today, and has acted in a couple of movies few years back. It was during that period when Tamil film director Thangarbacchan had to apologize for the controversial comment he passed about film actresses. I told my friend that, “I hear a lot about the film stars & their secret lives, but then I always doubt the credibility about the news.” And she very honestly reverted saying, “I hear a lot about astrologers & their phony tales, but then I always doubt the credibility about the news!” One tight slap I should say!
My head spun for a while and took few seconds to touch base with reality. She had her point strong - four people were sacked from ‘INFOSYS’ for sexual harassment. What do you say about that now? She asked. And I didn’t have an answer.
She elaborated giving me an example too. Suppose I were a big time movie producer, and that a good looking babe approached me for a chance in my movie, what would I do? My decision of taking her in my movie would make or break her life and would decide her future for the next 10 years of her life. And what do I get in the whole deal? And I am not into any kind of social service. Mmmmm I might ask her the favour for sure! She added, “it is not about sex, it is about power!” I agreed.
It all depends upon individuals about how far one goes in compromising on his/her life to make it big or to become successful & rich. Generalizing one particular segment or industry isn’t right – was the lesson I learnt that day.
I pondered over the topic, and I recollected few incidents that really had taken place around me. We had a maid who earlier was a daily labour working in house construction firm. She quit her work, because the mason would want her to sleep with him everyday for her daily wages. The mason holds the power here, and he would sleep with all the women who work under him. The daily wages was just Rs 75! For few 75 lakhs makes a difference, and for few Rs 75 makes a lot of difference.
It took place in one of the media company I worked a couple of years back. Both husband and wife were working in the same firm. Both of them were very close to the BIG BOSS – and the boss was always extra courteous to the couple – when it came to appraisal and salary hikes. One day it so happened that the wife and the boss were watching porn movie sitting inside boss’s cabin, and the hubby was busy editing the news outside -- not that the hubby didn’t know what was happening inside the cabin. The BIG BOSS ruled the roost here ;)
Very recently one of my friends (girl) had some problems with her senior in an IT firm. He would keep staring at her, and would send some nasty signals. Like a hero I had to get into the scene to solve the problem. Thankfully the problem is solved– she quit and got onto another company for a better pay and better post!
